Insurance

Goats are inexpensive enough that it is not necessary to insure them, though you might want to do so.

But because of the high cost of alpacas you will want to insure them. Otherwise you could loose a lot of money should an animal die unexpectedly. Here are some links to the most well known insurance companies that specialize in insuring Alpacas.

Alpaca Insurance Basics

Alpacas are a unique investment, in that they can be insured to cover you against loss, in certain circumstances.  You obviously can't prevent losing money due to drop in market value, or producing a cria that is not up to a certain value, and unfortunately there is no insurance that I have found against loss of fertility in females.

Alpacas can, however, be insured for Full Theft and Mortality for a small % of the insured value per year, crias up to six months for a bit higher percentage. Some policies have endorsements for major medical, surgical, loss of use, or infertility of
breeding males.

There are not too many people who feel like paying to cover their entire herd.   Lots of breeders drop the insurance on a dam after she produces a female offspring.   There have been whole herd policies with lower rates per animal, whereby the whole herd gets coverage, for one annual payment and a combined deductible.  This might lower the total payment on a larger herd, while maintaining coverage on all the animals rather than just a select few.
