2006 (Our first year)

Jan

Built a 300' cross fence to separate goats and alpacas. Also built a cross fence for goats and a pen for males. That is our goat barn in the distance.

Feb

After digging 50 post holes we are finally ready to finish the cross fencing. The dirt is so thin that it required a jackhammer to did the holes.

March

First 2 kids born on March 7 & 8

April

Chyna finally has her cria; two weeks overdue. The first alpaca born here. He is a little boy, and our youngest son has named him 'Yaounde' after the capital city of Cameroon where we spent 3 months a year ago.

May

Finally finished the cross fencing (over 900 ft) for the Alpaca pasture, subdividing it into 5 separate pastures. The fences radiate from a central holding pen to make herding the animals easier.

June

A friend gave us three guinea hens. We had to modify one of the outbuildings to serve as a house for them. They have adjusted well and are working hard to cut down the grasshopper population. They are also laying a lot of eggs. We are having to do a lot of study on how to care for them, but they are fun to watch.

Finished a 10' X 14' storage shed, next to the holding pen. Now all the food and other stuff is no longer cluttering up our garage.
July

Our son, John, came to visit for a few weeks and spent some time helping us to put up three shade shelters. They are each 20' square and are covered with 70% shade cloth. The animals love them!

First batch of Guinea eggs hatched. Started with 13 chicks, but lost 9 to predators.

Oct

Ordered a carport for our truck and trailer as well as a new shelter for the Alpaca boys.  We like them enough to order 3 more; one for Alpaca girls, one for boy goats, and one for girl goats. Should come in mid Nov.

Nov

We purchased Maizie from Copper Hill Alpacas. She is a lovely light fawn girl, pregnant and due in April 2007. We now have 6 alpacas and 9 goats.

Our second batch of Guinea eggs hatched. We now have 10 of the noisy birds!

Dec

Had 3 more shelters built. Our family came for Christmas and helped us put up a new fence and shelter for our Billy Goat, and Replac some siding on the bird shelter.
